VKAT Tobacco Litter Buckets

Windsor VKAT (Vermont Kids Against Tobacco) has spent two years hard at work studying the impact that tobacco litter has on the Earth and their town of Windsor, VT.  Each week the group meets to conduct research and discuss solutions on this critical issue.  On May 1, 2015, VKAT took part in a tobacco litter pick-up from State Street to Railroad Avenue in Windsor, collecting 1,927 cigarette butts, in addition to 885 that were picked up earlier that week.

Tobacco litter is the #1 source of litter in the world, with 4.3 trillion cigarette butts dropped every year.  Yes, trillion!  The chemicals in the cigarette butts quickly seep into the ground and are toxic if swallowed by humans or animals.  The good news is that there are ways to help.  On May 15, 2015, with the help of artist and art therapist Ben Fox, the VKAT group painted tobacco litter buckets at ArtisTree in South Pomfret, VT.

Interested community members are able to adopt these buckets free of charge to help keep Windsor a beautiful place to work, play, and live.  By adopting a bucket, the VAKT group will provide a bucket to put up in town where tobacco litter is an issue.  All the adopter has to do is empty the bucket as it becomes full.  For more information on how you can obtain a tobacco litter bucket, please contact Mt. Ascutney Prevention Partnership (MAPP) Youth Outreach Coordinator, Rachel Williams, at 802-674-2900 x 25 or at
